The nineteenth century marked a transformative period in the history of Indian education, characterized by the emergence of British colonial educational policies that reshaped institutional structures, knowledge production, linguistic practices, and intellectual identities. This research develops an analytical framework for examining how colonial education operated as both an instrument of administrative governance and a mechanism of social transformation. The study adopts a qualitative historical review methodology based exclusively on existing scholarly contributions concerning colonial educational strategies, English-medium instruction, institutional development, social stratification, and postcolonial educational debates. The analysis explores the relationship between colonial objectives, curriculum formation, language policies, and the reconfiguration of indigenous knowledge systems. Findings indicate that British educational interventions created new opportunities for modern intellectual engagement, professional mobility, and institutional expansion while simultaneously marginalizing traditional educational structures and reinforcing social inequalities. The framework highlights the complex duality of colonial education: it functioned as a tool of political control while also generating spaces for intellectual resistance, nationalism, and knowledge reconstruction. The study contributes to historical education research by integrating perspectives on policy, culture, language, and social change, offering a multidimensional understanding of colonial educational legacies in contemporary Indian society.
