This research critically examines the applicability of Paulo Freire’s educational principles within the education system of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The study adopts a qualitative, analytical review approach based exclusively on the provided literature, with particular attention to curriculum theory, Freirean pedagogy, educational reform, architectural education, language teaching, and the historical and policy context of Iraqi Kurdistan. The analysis positions Freirean education around several interconnected principles: dialogue, critical consciousness, learner participation, praxis, contextualized knowledge, and the transformation of teacher–student relationships. The literature indicates that these principles have considerable relevance to educational environments in which curriculum, institutional structures, and pedagogical practices are shaped by historical, ideological, and policy conditions. Null’s conception of curriculum as a relationship between educational theory and practice provides an important conceptual foundation for evaluating whether curricular intentions are translated into meaningful classroom experiences (Null, 2011). Evidence concerning architectural education in Iraqi Kurdistan further demonstrates the practical potential of Freirean ideas, while studies of English-language teaching and broader educational reform reveal both opportunities and structural constraints. The findings suggest that Freirean pedagogy can contribute to participatory, reflective, and context-sensitive education in Iraqi Kurdistan, but its implementation requires institutional support, teacher preparation, curriculum flexibility, and recognition of local educational realities. The study concludes that Freirean principles should not be treated as a universal instructional formula but as a critical framework that can inform locally responsive educational transformation.
