Abstract

This study delves into the theme of power dynamics and resistance in Howard Brenton's play, "Magnificence," specifically examining the disappointment associated with socialism. Through a close analysis of the play's characters, plot, and socio-political context, the research explores the portrayal of power struggles and the subsequent disillusionment with socialist ideals. The study employs a textual analysis approach to unravel the complex interplay of power dynamics and resistance within the play's narrative. The findings highlight the characters' experiences of shattered hopes, failed utopian visions, and the resulting resistance against oppressive systems. The analysis sheds light on the deeper socio-political commentary in "Magnificence" and underscores the playwright's exploration of the human condition in the face of disillusionment.
