Abstract

This research paper delves into the lasting influence of the concept of Scala Naturae (the Great Chain of Being) on contemporary discussions surrounding the 'Evolution of Language.' Scala Naturae was a hierarchical worldview prevalent in ancient and medieval times that placed living beings on a linear scale from the simplest to the most complex. While modern scientific understandings have largely replaced this notion, its historical impact can still be discerned in current debates about the origin, development, and diversification of language. Through a thorough examination of historical sources and contemporary linguistic research, this study explores how remnants of Scala Naturae continue to shape perspectives and theories in the 'Evolution of Language' discourse.
